Motor Problems

I have a problem with my 50 HP 2 stoke Mercury. I will be running along at about 4800 rpm and with out warning, the rpm will drop to 3500 rpm at full throttle. I put the boat in neutral and rev it up to red line 5,000 rpm for a second, go back to an idle and then put it in gear slowly throw the throttle and will still only get 3500 rpm out of it at full throttle.The bulb also gets soft sometimes Then for no reason, it may or may not clear up and run right.
