The Fisheries Campaign of the Marine Resources Council (MRC) has the objective of restoring the once thriving sea life in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL). Many of us remember, as recently as the '70s, when our water was clear and acres of sea grass covered the flats. The IRL was the sea trout capital of the world and teemed with snook, reds and other species fun to catch and great to eat. We stood on the bridges at night and dipped huge shrimp and blue crabs for the table. We could wade in…

Boat Anchoring Tips

I have been living near the coast line for a long time and it never ceases amaze me just how many “so called boaters” don’t know how to properly anchor their boats. This would be very amusing if it wasn’t for the fact that it can be also very dangerous.

Anchoring a boat is actually one of the most basic skills associated with boating, which may be one of the reasons why people take it for granted. It seems so simple that many people don’t even think about it. They take for granted that all… Continue

Florida Boating Safety- Tips to Keep in Mind

While it’s a bit of a part time hobby or what some might call a “cause”, I suppose, I enjoy teaching people about boating safety and I often volunteer for opportunities to teach Florida boat safety. I wanted to share some of my favorite Florida boating safety tips here on my blog.

• Don’t drink and boat (you can now be arrested for Boating Under the Influence –BUI)

• Before a day on the waters, get the weather… Continue

What is a Blog? Please read this before posting a new blog..

There appears to be some confusion on the difference between forum / discussions and blogs. In general, a forum/discussion is intended for two way conversations and/or questions and a blog can be thought of as more of a one way journal that can be commented on.

A blog (short for weblog) is a personal online journal that is frequently updated and intended for general public consumption. They are usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of… Continue

"Island Sundays"

One of the great things about living in Florida is the wonderful weather that we have year round. After a week of cooler temperatures, we welcomed our normal 70s and 80s. Another great thing about Florida living is being able to spend an "Island Sunday" on the water with friends in January! We take our boat to one of the many islands on the Indian and Banana Rivers, unload our chairs, relax and enjoy the warm sunshine with a cold drink in hand.… Continue
